All-Ireland U15 Hibernia Cup Semi Final (Peter O’Keefe Cup)

Delaney Excels as Mayo march onto All-Ireland Final

Mayo                     5-15

Donegal                0-03

In Donegal CoE, Convoy, Co. Donegal.

The Mayo U15 hurlers made the long journey to Convoy in Donegal on Saturday 27th August to contest for the Peter O’Keefe Memorial Cup as part of this years Hibernia Cup Tournament. The event was the culmination of the years activity which started back in April, and saw the side travel many parts of the country with games in Abbottstown, Kilcormac and Craughwell.

This semi final between Mayo and Donegal was expected to be a close affair, as both sides were hotly fancied coming into the game. But four goals from Mayo sharpshooter David Delaney between the 14th and the 21st minutes of the game put the game beyond doubt by half time. Mayo recorded a fifth goal in the opening half from the stick of Dylan Quinn, to leave the half time score at 5-7 to 0-2 in favour of the Westerners. The Mayo points in this opening half came from all directions with Delaney, Quinn (2), Ben Joyce, Eoghan Enright and Niall Peoples (2) chipping in with minors.

With the impending final close on the horizon, Mayo took the opportunity to provide game time for their 34 strong travelling panel, but the flow of scores kept continuing for the Green and Red. Points from Peoples (4), Fionn Cinsealla, and Dylan Quinn again left the Tir Connaill challenge floundering, while Mayo subs Michael Gough and Kevin Rowland chipped in with points late on. Mayo now qualified for their respective Cup final, and would play Armagh who had earlier defeated Longford on a 2-10 to 0-4 score line.
