With less than two weeks left to the All-Ireland U14 Feile na nGael Hurling Championships in Cork, the young hurlers of the Castlebar Mitchells Hurling Club and the Tooreen Hurling Club are preparing diligently for the largest weekend underage hurling festival in Ireland. The tournament will commence on Friday 16th June and will run until the finals in Pairc Ui Caoimh on Sunday 18th June. Both sides qualified to represent their county in their respective divisions due to their fine achievements in the Mayo Feile na nGael qualifiers, with Castlebar Mitchels, the eventual winners, participating in the National Division 3 Section. In their group, they will be hosted by the Iniscarra Hurling Club, just ten miles to the West of Cork City. Other teams they will play over the weekend include Valley Rovers (Inishannon, Cork) and Laois representatives Camross. The Castlebar side is managed by Galway native Gerry Lane, along with team mentors Michael Clune and Paddy OBrien. The Tooreen Hurling Club, who will be attending the National Feile Championships for the sixth year in succession, will play in the Division 4 section and will be hosted by the Glanworth Hurling Club in North-East Cork. Also in their group are Cork Club St Catherines (Ballynoe) and Glenarriffe, who are the second representatives from County Antrim. Tooreen will be looking to repeat their feat of 2004, where the East Mayo nursery brought home the Division 3 Title to Mayo. The Tooreen charges are led by manager Paul Hunt ably assisted by mentors Stephen Leneghan and Ken Robinson. The weekend promises to be a massive occasion with many parents, club officers and supporters making the journey to Cork to support their young hurling heros. The parade, with all participating hurling and camogie clubs taking part, will take place around the streets of Cork City on Friday evening 16th June. And that wont be all the Mayo representatives from Mayo competing over the weekend, as young Ballyhaunis Hurler Gearoid Keane will represent Mayo in the National Feile na nGael Skills Competition on Saturday 17th June in Pairc Ui Rinn. Gearoid qualified to represent Mayo with a fine performance in the Mayo Feile Skills Competition recently.
