Mayo End Campaign with Win

Mayo                 2-15
Roscommon       5-02

The Mayo U16 Hurlers rounded off their campaign for 2006 with a hard fought win over Connacht neighbours Roscommon in this U-16B tie played in Roscommon on Saturday evening last. The victory was sealed from the exploits of Tooreen pair Joey Ganley and Kenny Feeney who between them struck 1-12 of their sides total.

The first half saw Mayo get off to a shaky start with the consession of a goal and a point early on, but some restructuring in the Mayo defence helped to settle the side. Mayo went on to record scores of their own from Joey Ganley (3), Niall McCarney and Kenny Feeney before Mayo recorded their first goal of the game from Brian Hunt, as his long ball decieved Roscommon goalkeeper Nace Connaughton before finding the net to leave the interval scoreline at 1-5 to 1-1 in favour of Mayo.

The second half was a more open affair as scores began to flow more freely from both sides. Kenny Feeney and Joey Ganley (mostly frees) continued throughout to find the Roscommon posts, while Roscommon themselves were not shy in front of the posts as they rattled the Mayo net on four more occassions between the 31st and 45th minutes of the game. Mayo never conceded their lead throughout and finished the stronger with five points without reply in the final eight minutes to give themselves a comfortable four point win.

Mayo will be happy to finish their year with a win, and will know what is required of them at this standard in the coming years.
