Current champions Tooreen face up and coming Castlebar Mitchells in the County U16 Hurling Championship final in Ballyvary on Saturday next. Tooreen will be hot favourites for this tie after their win earlier in the year in the U16 league.
The Tooreen side will be made up of many players who represented Mayo in the All-Ireland U16B Championship earlier in the year with Cathal Freeman, Kenny Feeney, Joe Ganley, Greg Henry and Michael Morley all expected to turn in good performances. The Tooreen team is managed by Dom Greally,
Castlebar Mitchells are now reaping the reward from the great work done at underage level in the past number of years and will come to this game confident of a good display. The county-town side have their own Mayo stars to call upon with Niall McCarney, Andrew Butler, Christy Butler, Stephen Fitzgerald and David OMalley all to the fore in their earlier round victories over Belmullet, Ballina and Castlebar. The Castlebar side is managed by Michael Clune along with the help of Paddy OBrien.
With a place in the Connacht U16 Club Championship at stake, both sides will be pushing hard for this game and the excellent surface at Ballyvary Community Grounds will bring out the most from the young hurlers on view.
