NUIG        2-13
Mayo        0-12
The Mayo hurlers got their season up and running with this Connacht Hurling Cup first round loss to a sharper NUIG side at Ballyvary on Saturday. Martin Brennans first outing proved a very worthwhile exercise, with Mayo pushing a star studded NUIG side all the way to the end. Two first half NUIG goals from Dara Egan and David Kenny proved crucial as NUIG led at the break by 2-7 to 0-3. Mayos points in the opening half came from Adrian Freeman (2) and Anthony Healy.
Playing with the aid of the strong breeze in the second half, Mayo began to claw back their half time defecit, with further points from frees from Adrian Freeman (who finished with 0-8 in total), sub Martin Devaney, Derek McConn and Derek Walsh. However, NUIG kept the scoreboard ticking over at the other end of the field and finished strongly to ease to a seven point victory.
Mayo: Tom Duffy; Derek Walsh (0-1), Paul Hunt, Brian Delaney; Stephen Coyne, Paddy Barrett, Ger Whyte; Stephen Broderick, Derek McConn (0-1); Anthony Healy (0-1), Derek McDonnell, Adrian Freeman (0-8,8f); Stephen Hunt, Paul Broderick, Rory Campion. Subs: Martin Devaney (0-1), Michael Cunnane, John Duffy, Justin Freyne & Ian Collins.
