Hurling: Busy Weekend Ahead for Mayo Senior Hurlers

  • Jan 18,2007
The Mayo Senior Hurlers have a busy weekend ahead, with two ties down for decision. On Saturday, Mayo face Leitrim in the Connacht Hurling Shield Semi Final at Ballyvary. Throw in time for this one is 2.00 with Anthony Flaherty (Roscommon)  appointed to take charge. Manager Martin Brennan will hope to give all his bench a run in this encounter, with many of the central figures being rested for this game. Last weekend, Mayo lost their opening game of the season by seven points to NUIG while Leitrim went down by a solitary point to Sligo.

On the following day, Sunday 21st January, Mayo face the long journey to Carlow to face Carlow IT in the Leinster Kehoe Cup at 2.00. Mayo have taken part in this competition in the last number of years, and now face a novel outing against the Leinster students. This is Carlow ITs first year in this competition, and with Carlow IT hosting the Fitzgibbon Cup in the coming weeks, the students will be looking to advance from this tie. Carlow IT draw their players predominantly from Kilkenny and Wexford, so will have good pedigree of hurlers to draw from. The winners of this game face either Meath or Roscommon, who do battle at the same time in Navan.
