Hurling: NHL Division 2B Round 2 Preview

  • Feb 26,2007
Mayo v Kerry
Sunday 4th March
in Castlebar at 2.30.
Ref: Ger Hoey (Clare)
Just as the Kerry football team came to Castlebar a month ago with little success, the Mayo Senior Hurlers will be hoping for a similar result in this National Hurling League Round 2 match at Castlebar on Sunday next. With Kerry having won their opening round tie against London a fortnight ago, they will be pushing hard for a second win to put them in pole position for a place in next years Division 2 proper.
Martin Brennan along with selector Jimmy Martin and trainer Ray McNamara have been working hard on the team over the past fortnight on lifting the spirits of the Mayo side after their cruel opening round loss to Kildare two weeks ago. On that day, Mayo were a point to the good going into injury time but let in a goal with virtually the last puck of the game to give victory to the Lillywhites. The Mayo positives of that day however were the scoring displays of Keith Higgins and newcomer Niall Murphy, and the strong defensive unit which kept Kildare at bay for long periods of the game. On the flip side, the lack of an inside forward line scoring threat will be a worry for Martin Brennan.
Mayo are expected to have a full strength side for the visit of the Kingdom, and with home advantage, should have enough in the tank to see off the challenge of the Munster side. The Mayo Hurling Board have requested for extra support from the public for this game, so if you are free on Sunday try and get yourself along to support the Red and Green hurlers.
