Mayo GAA Comórtas Peile Competition relaunched

  • Mar 02,2007

Mayo football manager John O’Mahoney officially launched the 2007 Mayo Comórtas Peile na Gaeltachta competition this week.  The Comórtas Peile competition is one of the most successful, prestigious and popular football tournaments around the country with RTÉ and TG4 broadcasting the junior and senior finals live each year.

This is the first time in years that the Mayo GAA has officially designated a specific weekend in the county for the football tournament.

“We met with the Mayo Gaeltacht clubs on a number of occasions this year and they asked for the county board to step in and revamp the Comórtas competition in the county.  That is what we have done.  The Mayo GAA Board feels this national competition deserves proper recognition and support and so we have put new structures in place to run it.  The first step in this process was designating a specific weekend for the competitions and we have that in place now.  The tournament will be reviewed and assessed later this month.  We have plans to introduce ladies GAA, hurling and a whole host of other activities but that will take time to develop.  This year we are moving in small steps and if it is a success we have scope to add to it further for next year.” CLG Mhaigh Eo Oifigeach na Gaeilge Piaras Ó Raghallaigh stated.

This coming weekend (March 10th and 11th) has been put aside for the competitions and all the Gaeltacht clubs in Mayo will be competiting.  The host club for 2007 is Belmullet and all the games will take place at Drum pitch on Saturday and Sunday afternoon.

“We will have two senior and junior semi-finals on Saturday with the junior and senior final taking center state on Sunday afternoon.  It should be a great occasion.  We will be presenting two new cups and a set of plaques to both victorious teams.  They then go forward with the All-Ireland Comórtas Champions Belmullet to represent the county at the national finals in Cork in May.” Ó Raghallaigh stated.

A special social night will also be held in Teach John Joe ar an Éachléim on the Saturday night with music, craic agus cómhra.  “The comórtas peile competition also provides a platform for the promotion of the Irish language and Irish culture and we are keen and eager to see all the clubs making a sincere effort.”  Ó Raghallaigh stated.

Mayo manager John O’Mahoney said he was delighted to launch the tournament as the Mayo Gaeltacht clubs had produced some outstanding county players in the past.  “It is a great idea and I fully support the efforts of the county board and the clubs themselves,” he said.
