GPA Scholarships for Mayo Hurlers

  • Mar 02,2007
Two members of the Mayo Senior Hurling Panel have been chosen for the GPA Scholarship Scheme for 2007. Shane Morley (Tooreen) and Brian Higgins (Westport) who both attend Sligo IT have been chosen to recieve the Club Energise Sports Sponsored bursary. Under the GPA scholarship scheme, each student will receive €1,000 to help off-set the cost of their education and help sustain their commitment to Gaelic games during the academic year. Due to the students’ commitment to their sport, the ability to pursue part-time work or generate any subsidiary income can be almost impossible.

Shane Morley is a regular on Martin Brennans Mayo Hurling side and is also a noted footballer with the Aghamore GAA Club. Brian Higgins broke into the Mayo Senior Panel last year and this year is pushing hard for a place in the starting fifteen. Both players were key figures in the Mayo U21 side on route to the All-Ireland U21B final in 2007, where Mayo were defeated by Laois. Higgins is eligable for the U21 grade for the next two seasons. Both players held positions in the full-back line for Sligo IT in the Ryan Cup colleges competition, before they were knocked out in the semi-final stage by Athlone IT, and also played in the Connacht Hurling Cup with their college side. A total of 64 Scholarships were awarded in 2007 by the GPA.
