Hurling: NHL Division 2B Round 3 Preview

  • Mar 11,2007
Mayo v London
on Sun 18th March at 3.30
in McHale Park, Castlebar.
Ref: Brendan Sweeney (Cavan)

The Mayo senior Hurlers will be trying to pick up their second Division 2B home win on the trot as the exiles from London will visit Castlebar on Sunday next. The Mayo camp is currently on a high after their comprehensive defeat of Kerry ten days ago, while London had a bye in Round 2 on the same weekend.

With the top three from their group of five - which also includes Kildare, Westmeath and the aforementioned Kerry - going into Division 2 proper of the 2008 NHL due to the restructuring of the leagues next season, this game is a must win for Martin Brennans charges. Reports from the squad show a clean bill of health apart from a light ankle strain for goalkeeper Tom Duffy. Keith Higgins - who scored eight points against Kerry last time out - is available for action this weekend and more of the same scoring prowess is exected from the dual star.

The London team will feature many of the side which claimed the Nicky Rackard Cup crown in Croke Park in 2005, and also will have the phsychological advantage over Mayo knowing that the Westerners have never recorded a victory over the exiles in recent years. In their previous two meetings, London defeated Mayo in a league division two play-off in Ballina in 2003, while the outcome was the same when Mayo travelled to Ruislip in the corresponding league fixture last season. With many players from the traditional counties of Kilkenny, Cork and Tipperary in their ranks, their is no questioning the amount of individual talent that London have at their disposal. However, London tend not to travel well, and with the added distraction of the festival weekend, this game may be a bridge too far for the exiles.

In the opening round London went down to Kerry in Killarney on a scorline of 3-10 to 1-13.
