St Ciarans Adult Hurling Side Assemble For The First Time

Another milestone in the development of club hurling in Mayo last night was the first ever training session of the St Ciarans Adult Hurling side in the Ballyvary Community Grounds. The St Ciarans adult side is an amalgamation of the seven Junior Hurling Clubs in the county, and players from all seven clubs were represented at the opening get together – in preparation for the upcoming Mayo GAA Senior Hurling Championship which commences in mid September.

The fledgling side is backboned by players from this years JuniorA and JuniorB championship – which concluded last weekend – and will go into the Mayo GAA Senior Hurling Championship as outsiders. A lot of coordination and planning has gone in over the past number of months in facilitating the side – with the ambition of providing an opportunity for players from Junior hurling clubs to play in Mayo’s top tier hurling competition.

The St Ciarans side is managed by Sean McGahon (Moytura), with a backroom team of Brendan Walsh (Claremorris), Gary Barrett (Ballina), Norman Finnerty (Caiseal Gaels), Billy McGhee (Ballyvary), Sean Granahan (Moytura) and Eoghan McGrath (Gaeltacht Iorrais). The side opens their SHC campaign in Round 1 on Saturday 9th September against Castlebar Mitchel’s at 6.30pm in Ballyvary.
