RIP Noel McDonnell

Mayo GAA are saddened to hear of the passing of Noel McDonnell Mayfield, Claremorris Co.Mayo

Predeceased by his parents Paddy and Helen, brother Michael, sisters Elizabeth and Helen and son-in-law Martin Gilligan.

Noel will be sadly missed by his loving wife Colette, daughters Olive (Gilligan) and Claire (Noone), son-in-law Ger Noone and his precious grandchildren Anna, Jack, Matthew, Henry and Mollie, his brother Joey, sisters Anne (O’Brien), Connie (McDonnell), Mary (Mulryan), Cathy (Slattery) and Helen (Reapy), sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, neighbours and friends.

Noel played senior and underage grades with Mayo for a number of seasons and was at left cornerback on the Mayo team that defeated Kerry by 4-9 to 1-7 in the All Ireland U21 Final replay in 1967. The drawn game was in Croke Park and the replay, when Willie McGee from Newport scored Mayo’s four goals, was played in Duggan Park, Ballinasloe.
Noel played for a few seasons with the fine Ballyhaunis team of the early to mid-70s and is also fondly remembered in that club at this time.
The McDonnell family have been synonymous with Claremorris and Mayo GAA over the decades and they continue to play a central role in the club to this day.
