Mayo Senior Football Team Announced

Mayo Senior Football Team Announced

Press Release www.mayogaa.com

Mayo senior football manager Kevin McStay has made two changes from the team that started against Armagh last  week for this weekend’s Round 5 of the Allianz National Football League with Kerry at Hastings Insurance MacHale Park on Saturday 1st March at 3pm.

The two changes to the Mayo team sees Jack Coyne Ballyhaunis replace Eoin O’Donoghue and Aidan O’Shea Breaffy comes in for Conor Reid. Stephen Coen Hollymount Carramore will captain the team on the day.

Mayo and Kerry have met on 54 occasions in League action, with the Kingdom being the county Mayo have met most often in League fare. Mayo and Kerry first met in the League 1928, when the Kingdom won a semi-final meeting between the counties on a 0-6 to 0-4 score-line, in a game that was played in Castlebar. The Munstermen hold an overall advantage, 27 wins to 23, with four games drawn. Three of those games have been League finals, with Kerry coming out on top in 1971 and 1972, and Mayo winning the most recent final meeting in 2019.

Since the turn of the century Mayo has had the upper-hand in League meetings between the two counties. Of the 22 meetings between the counties since 2000, Mayo has 12 wins, to the Kingdom’s 9, with the 2012 meeting in Tralee finishing all square.

11 different venues have hosted League meetings between the counties. Tralee with 16 meetings and Castlebar with 15 have been the most popular, while there were 7 meetings in Croke Park in the latter stages of the competition, including three final meetings. Other venues used have been Ballina 4, Killarney 3, Crossmolina 2, Salthill 2, and Thurles, Limerick, Listowel and Ennis with one meeting each.

Sean Hurson from Tyrone has been announced as the referee for the game on Saturday.

There will be live commentary on Midwest Radio with Michael D McAndrew and Colm Boyle. The game this weekend will not be shown on TV.

Mayo GAA will have live updates across all social media channels on Saturday.

Mayo Senior Football Team Announced

Press Release www.mayogaa.com

Mayo senior football manager Kevin McStay has made two changes from the team that started against Tyrone last time out for Round 4 of the Allianz National Football League game against Armagh on Saturday 22nd February at 5pm in the BOX-IT Athletic Grounds. Aidan O’Shea and Ryan O’Donoghue return to the starting line ahead of Paul Towey and Cian McHale. Stephen Coen Hollymount Carramore will captain the team on the day.

This weekend’s meeting will be the 17th League meeting of Mayo and Armagh, with the first coming in 1979, which means the rivalry between the counties is a recent one.  Armagh hold the upperhand with 8 wins to Mayo’s 5, with three drawn games in 1981, 1997 and their most recent meeting in 2023.
Seven games have been played at Armagh venues, with the Athletic Grounds hosting 6 meetings, and Lurgan the 1981 drawn game.  Mayo have enjoyed home advantage on 5 occasions, Charlestown 3, Ballyhaunis and MacHale Park in 2012 hosted these games.  Four games have been played at neutral venues, with Croke Park hosting the 1986 Quarter-Final and 2005 Semi-Final, Carrick-on-Shannon the 1988 Relegation Play-Off meeting, and Hyde Park the 2022 meeting, which was a home game for Mayo when MacHale Park was unavailable due to pitch improvement works.
In addition to the League, Mayo and Armagh have met twice in the championship, the 1950 All-Ireland semi-final, and a 2019 Round 3 Qualifier game which was played in MacHale Park, with Mayo winning both of these games.

Barry Tiernan from Dublin will officiate at the game.

The game is live on TG4 with coverage starting at 4:30pm. Live commentary on Midwest Radio with Michael D McAndrew and Austin O’Malley.

Mayo GAA will have live updates across all social media channels on Saturday.
