Mayo Senior Football Team Announced

Mayo Senior Football Team Announced

Press Release www.mayogaa.com

Mayo senior football manager Kevin McStay has made two changes to the team that started against Derry last weekend for the final round of the Allianz National Football League this Sunday 23rd March at 3:45pm at Hastings Insurance MacHale Park.

Davitt Neary Breaffy and Darren McHale Knockmore replace Conor Reid and Jack Carney.

Stephen Coen Hollymount Carramore will captain the team on the day. Stephen will make his 125th league and championship appearance, which puts him in joint 10th place alongside Cillian O’ Connor on Mayo’s all-time list.

Mayo and Donegal have met in League action on 18 occasions, since their first meeting in 1940. Donegal hold the upper-hand, with seven victories to Mayo’s five, with six drawn encounters. It is interesting to note that 14 of these meetings between the counties have taken place in the last 20 years, before that they seldom met in League fare.

Ten of the sixteen meetings have taken place in Donegal, in Ballybofey (6), Ballyshannon (3), with one meeting in Letterkenny. Of Mayo’s six home games, four were played in MacHale Park, with two played in Ballina. The 2007 final meeting was played in Croke Park, while the 2022 meeting, a home game for Mayo, was played in Markievicz Park, Sligo, while the Hastings Insurance MacHale Park pitch was being upgraded.

Four of the drawn meetings have taken place in the last 9 years, which shows that encounters between these two west coast counties are generally very competitive. Today should be no different as both counties gear up for the championship season ahead, with the winners having a good chance of making next weekend’s League Final.

Joe McQuillan Cavan will be the referee on the day.

The game will be live TG4 Youtube Channel: https://youtube.com/live/MGQX4IL1lLY

Live broadcast on Midwest Radio with Michael D McAndrew and Colm Boyle on commentary.

There will be live update across all Mayo GAA social media platforms on Sunday afternoon.

RIP Jim Fleming

Mayo GAA are saddened to hear of the passing of Jim Fleming RIP, Knocknacunny, Ballaghaderreen and formerly of Ardnaree, Ballina.

Pre-deceased by his mother Maggie, father Patrick, seven sisters and brother.

Beloved husband of Annie and father of Mairead, Cáitlín, Ciara and Pat.

He will be deeply missed by his loving grandchildren Franck, Fiona, Anne, Anna, Katie, Clara, Amelia, Molly, Grace, Méabh, Blaithín, Eadaoin, John and David, along with his adored great-grandchildren Evie, Blanche, Henri, Louis, and Ivy, as well as his sons-in-law Dylan and Dermot and all his nieces and nephews.

A native of Ardnaree, Jim made his name with his local club, winning a Mayo Junior title in 1959, and making his Mayo debut against Dublin in a National League semi-final in 1958 aged 18. His work as a Garda took him to Donegal in the early 1960s, and he lined out with the Tír Conaill county during this period, winning a Donegal Senior medal with Sean MacCumhaills in 1962, and a Junior title with St Marys Convoy in 1963. He returned to the Mayo colours in 1964, and his final outing in the Green and Red was in the 1968 Connacht Final against Galway. In total, Jim made 30 League and Championship appearances for Mayo, and he also lined out for them in Croke Park in 1967 when they famously beat the touring Australian side. He was a member of the Ballaghaderreen panels that won Junior, Intermediate and Senior county titles in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Following the end of his playing career, Jim remained heavily involved in Mayo GAA, being a selector for the 1981 Connacht championship winning side. He was a founding member and one of the driving forces behind the Green & Red Trust for many years, and he also served as President of the Mayo GAA Board in 2014 and 2015.

Jim will repose at his home in Knocknacunny, Ballaghaderreen on Thursday, 20th March from 5pm until 8pm.

Removal for Requiem Mass at the Cathedral of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary and St. Nathy, Ballaghaderreen on Friday, 21st March at 12 noon.

Burial afterwards in Bonniconlon Cemetery, Co. Mayo
