PwC All-Star Nominee Jack Coyne Appointed Captain of Mayo Senior Football Team

Mayo GAA is pleased to announce that Ballyhaunis dual star Jack Coyne has been named captain of the Mayo senior football team for the upcoming season.  The 25-year-old defender, Mayo All-Star nominee this year, succeeds Paddy Durcan in the role.

Jack Coyne becomes the latest Ballyhaunis clubman to lead the county team, following in the footsteps of Keith Higgins, who captained Mayo in 2015.  Extending his best wishes, Mayo GAA Chairperson Seamus Tuohy praised Coyne’s leadership and consistency.

“Jack goes about his business in an understated but extremely effective and composed manner.  He is an exemplary individual who has proven himself as a teak-tough defender over recent years.  Jack has been an integral member of the Mayo senior football panel for the past few years, and his leadership both on and off the pitch is outstanding,” commented Seamus Tuohy.

Jack Coyne, a former captain of the Mayo U20’s, was a standout presence in defence throughout Kevin McStay’s management tenure.  Mayo GAA senior football manager Andy Moran has also confirmed to Mayo GAA that Ryan O’Donoghue from CLG Bhéal an Mhuirthead and Darren McHale from Knockmore GAA will serve as vice-captains for the forthcoming season.

Jack Coyne

A Mayo U17 and Minor in 2017, and U20 in 2019 and 2020, Jack made his Mayo debut in the 2021 Connacht Senior championship, when he came on as a substitute against Leitrim. Since then Jack has gone on to establish himself in the full-back line, making 21 League and 20 championship appearances for Mayo to date. His form in 2025 saw him nominated for an All-Star award.

With Mayo, Jack has won a Connacht Senior medal in 2021, and FBD and Allianz League medals in 2023, while with his club Jack was a Mayo Intermediate winner in 2022.

Darren McHale

A Mayo U21 in 2015, Knockmore’s Darren McHale made his Mayo Senior debut in 2016 in a League game against Dublin. Following his return to the panel in 2020, Darren has become a regular for his county, making 18 League and 20 championship appearances in total. His honours include Connacht Senior medals in 2020 and 2021, and FBD and Allianz League medals in 2023.

With Knockmore, Darren won successive Mayo Senior medals in 2020 and 2021, in addition to a Mayo Senior League medal in 2019.

Ryan O’ Donoghue

Ryan played Minor for Mayo in 2016, U21 in 2017, and U20 in 2018, when he won a Connacht medal before losing to Kildare in the All-Ireland Final. He made his Mayo Senior debut in 2020 against Donegal in the Allianz League, and since then has amassed 42 League and 30 championship appearances. Nominated three times for an All-Star award in 2020, 2021 and 2024, Ryan won an award in 2021, and he was overall top scorer in the 2024 All-Ireland Senior Football championship.

With Mayo he has won Connacht Senior medals in 2020 and 2021, and FBD and Allianz League medals in 2023, while for Beal An Mhuirthead, Ryan won a Mayo Intermediate medal in 2018, and was a member of the U21A and Senior teams that reached Mayo finals in 2017 and 2021 respectively.
