2024 GAA & Specsavers Social Initiative – Allianz League Match Day Trip

We are delighted to be rolling out the GAA & Specsavers Social Initiative again in 2024. This partnership with Specsavers Local Stores aims to encourage a connection and re-connection between local GAA Clubs and older and more vulnerable people in the community.
Feedback from clubs and counties has highlighted the popularity of a match day trip for older and more vulnerable people and that a trip organised specifically for this group generated a sense of excitement for them. Attending inter-county matches and being seated in a designated area made them feel important, remembered, and included.  Invitees said the experience of being amongst a crowd of supporters was enjoyable and entertaining, and opened the possibility of them forming or re-forming a connection with their local club.
Specsavers Local Stores are providing a €500 contribution towards a Match Day Trip for older and more vulnerable persons to GAA Allianz League match.  If your club is interested in participating in the 2024 GAA & Specsavers Social Initiative – Allianz League Match Day Trip please submit an Expression of Interest by clicking on the image below.
Expression of Interest Form Closes on 22nd December 2023 at 12 noon
Please note: The submission of an Expression of Interest does not guarantee club selection. A review committee will select clubs and pair them with local stores. Clubs will be notified of the committee’s decision no later than 17th January 2024 if they have been selected to participate. If selected to participate clubs will be provided with a 2024 GAA Specsavers Social Initiative Match Day Trips Information Booklet – which will include guidance on steps and actions to support organisation of the trip.
Selected clubs must have a Designated Coordinator that will be the point of contact for the 2024 GAA Specsavers Social Initiative. The Designated Coordinator will liaise with the County Board and a member of the Wilson Hartnell Team (Specsavers Local Stores Representatives) in the organisation of the Match Day Trip.
Important: Tickets for Allianz League Games must be organised through the usual club mechanism used for county matches. They are not available from participating Specsavers Stores; Wilson Hartnell or Croke Park for this initiative.

Mayo GAA Charity Game

Mayo football manager Kevin McStay looking forward to GAA charity match in aid of the Motor Neurone Disease Association

Mayo GAA senior football manager Kevin McStay, Mayo GAA Cathaoirleach Seamus Tuohy, Mayo GAA secretary Ronan Kirrane and players Diarmuid O’Connor from the Mayo senior football panel and club All-star Aaron Timlin from Knockmore GAA were all at the Centre of Excellence in Bekan this week to show support for Mayo branch of the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association.

Mayo GAA in association with the local media named their 2023 Club All-Star panel last month to play the Mayo senior football team on December 30th at the Claremorris GAA Grounds at 1:30pm. The All-star players all starred for their clubs during the Mayo GAA Connacht Gold Senior, Egan Jewellers Intermediate and TF Royal Hotel & Theatre Junior football championships this year.

Mayo GAA PRO John Walker said everyone was looking forward to a great game now on December 30th. “Kevin has confirmed he will be putting out a very strong team to take on the club All-stars and I hope people come out in big numbers to support this very worthy charity,” commented John Walker.

Sixteen different club players featured on the Mayo GAA ‘Team of the Week’ more than once during the season with Breaffy’s Aidan O’Shea and Conor Beirne, Ballinrobe’s Kevin Quinn and Ballina Stephenites Sam Callinan featuring on three different teams.

Lillian McGovern, Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association CEO thanked Mayo GAA for their support saying they depend heavily on donations and fundraising efforts like this one. “We are a small organisation with 85% of our income coming from donations and fundraising. A huge thank you to all the players from the Mayo senior team and all the club players for agreeing to take part in this charity match. It’s sure to be a crowd pleaser and I’m hopeful that there will be a great turnout from the local community,” commented Lillian McGovern.

Mayo GAA Cathaoirleach Seamus Tuohy said everyone associated with Mayo GAA were delighted to be working with the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association as their charity partner for the next twelve months. “Motor Neurone Disease is a life changing disease and sadly we are all becoming aware of the great community and club people who are dealing with the illness. Over the next few months we have a range of different activities planned to fundraise and support the charity and do all we can to raise awareness of the disease and the supports that are out there,” commented Seamus Tuohy

The Club All-Stars will get commemorative Mayo GAA jerseys for the Charity Match with the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association logo on them. The club players will all wear their own club socks and shorts on the day. The charity game will be streamed LIVE on www.mayogaatv.com.

Draws for Electric Ireland GAA Higher Education Championship

Draws take place for Electric Ireland

GAA Higher Education Championships

The draws for the Electric Ireland GAA Higher Education Championships were made by Uachtarán CLG Larry McCarthy at Croke Park earlier today.

Matches start early in the new year and the finals will be hosted by MTU Kerry from February 13th– 18th. There was much excitement in the Sigerson Cup with reigning champions UCC being drawn against Ulster University, with other interesting ties such as Queen’s University v DCU DÉ and last year’s runners up University of Limerick facing ATU Donegal. The Fitzgibbon Cup which is initially a round robin competitions sees University of Limerick facing ATU Galway and TUS Midwest as they seek a third title in a row.

Uachtarán CLG Larry McCarthy said: “These Electric Ireland Higher Education Championships are an integral part of our competition calendar. These competitions have a proud history and heritage in our Association and have grown to offer the opportunity to play to more and more students and are valued by all who play in them. I want to thank Electric Ireland for their continuing support, and I look forward to watching the battles for these prestigious cups unfold in the new year and look forward to seeing the excellent facilities in Tralee host the concluding stages.”

Mike Hyland, Higher Education Chairperson, commented:

“The Electric Ireland Higher Education GAA Championships are amongst the highlights of the GAA calendar. We are really looking forward to such a strong programme of games across hurling and football in Tralee with teams competing at various levels outlining the strength of participation and performance in Higher Education GAA. We are delighted that Féile CA will take place in MTU Kerry from 13th-18th February. We are very thankful to Electric Ireland for their outstanding commitment to the Higher Education Leagues and Championships.”

Sarah Sharkey, Group Sponsorship & PR Manager at ESB and Electric Ireland, commented: “At Electric Ireland, we are always thrilled to see the return of the Electric Ireland GAA Higher Education Championships, signalling the beginning of a new GAA season. These competitions are an exciting way to kick off the new year, rekindling fierce rivalries between county teammates. We look forward to watching as players progress through these brilliant competitions and wish each college and player the very best of luck this season.”
