Billy Kenny Cup
The trophy presented to the winners of Mayo U21 A football championship is he Billy Kenny Cup.
Billy was born in Claremorris but the Kenny family left Claremorris in the late 1920’s first to Galway and eventually settling in Limerick.
He played for Limerick during the mid- 1940’s and was selected on the Munster Railway Cup team in 1947. Billy also represented UCG in the Sigerson’s Cup while a student. He then declared for Mayo, been part of their 1950 All Ireland winning team. After qualifying as a Doctor Billy emigrated to Canada during the 1960’s. He returned to live in Sligo with his family later relocated to Galway where he died in 1972. In 1971 Mayo GAA purchased a trophy named the Billy Kenny Cup in his honour to be presented to the U21 County Champions.
